Snow and ice control on your property is one of the highest risks for liability.  Insurance companies report paying out billions in claims directly related to snow and ice incidents.  In most cases, snow and ice control activities are generally performed by a snow and ice management contractor.  When hiring a snow and ice contractor it is important to have a general knowledge of snow and ice.  As a property owner/manager, hiring the wrong contractor could result in injuries, operational shutdowns, loss of business and even death.

In order to prevent catastrophic loss due to snow and ice it is important to be as prepared as you can be.  Most property managers have very well defined plans for things like mowing the grass.  Exact guidelines such as direction of mowing, when to mow, the height to mow, these are important, however when it comes to snow and ice plans it is often vague and generalized. Proactive planning, knowledge, and awareness, will not guarantee 100% impact free snow events, but it will help greatly reduce the risks involved with running a business or owning a property in a snow prone area.  Upon completion of this course, you will be better prepared to assess problems on the property, with a contractor, or with the contract itself, as well as develop a better understanding on how to canvas, hire, and manage your snow and ice contractor.

As with anything planning and preparing is the key to success, the amount of preparation and planning you put into your snow management program directly determines the outcome. We will go over what is necessary to be prepared.

Participants are encouraged to bring with them a section from their existing snow response management plan for discussion and further development during the workshop.

If you do not have a plan yet, no problem! You will start to develop one while completing this workshop.

The instructor will walk students through the process of organizing and consolidating existing policies, procedures and protocols into a comprehensive snow management plan. You will also receive handouts which will provide you with take-home information as you continue to develop your document beyond the workshop.

Throughout this workshop, participants will work with the instructor to develop consensus opinions on particular plan components for each of their plan document sections.

With so many changes in the snow and ice field in the past few years, the training and qualities of a professional snow and ice manager have increased.  Snow and ice managers who are successful in managing snow and ice events do so because they have well thought out strategy and process. Snow and ice managers need to be constantly planning and preparing for what a storm has in store for them and their team.

If there were no way to control what happens in a snow and ice event, this course would be nothing more than a waste of time.  Inaccurate forecasts, equipment breakdowns, as well as employee incompetence and customer irrational are all predictable.  The fact that there are some seasoned snow and ice managers who can effectively control how a snow and ice event goes, is proof that skill, education and experience payoff. Some snow managers find that a storm that has gone well, comes down to random illogical reasons, such as luck and superstitions.

Utilizing the lessons in this program, you will develop the skills necessary to minimize the uncontrollable.  If you think things are random than you lack the skill to see that these are all predictable controllable situations. Well prepared managers find it easy to see a situation arising before it does.
